VGF supports three villages located on the slopes of Mount Ketumbeine in northern Tanzania. The villages are named Olchoronyokie, Elang'atadapash, and Sokon.
Each village has around 4,000 inhabitants and a primary school with approximately 500 students.
At the top of Mount Ketumbeine, there is a forest reserve with water sources that supply the villages and the surrounding area with water year-round.
In the area where we work, the population mainly consists of Maasai people, who traditionally live off farming and livestock keeping. The Maasai are a nomadic group that moves with their cattle, and many old traditions are still preserved. However, the majority of the residents in Ketumbeine are settled and have learned to cultivate the land, although some still move with their cattle and only reside in Ketumbeine for part of the year. They speak their own language, Kimassaj, and many of them cannot speak Tanzania's official language, Swahili. Children grow up speaking Kimassaj, and it is only in school that they learn Swahili. Parents often try to keep their children at home to help guard the cattle, making it a challenge for the authorities to ensure that children are registered and attend school.
